My inspiration stems from art’s potential to ignite curiosity, the seed of transcendence. I am a native of Hawai’i and a citizen of the Earth; my music is guided by a burning desire to merge the cultural heritage of my kupuna (elders) with global themes, weaving the roots of Hawai’i's vast musical palette into a universal sound that includes influences from rock, bluegrass, African, Latin, Celtic, modern and folk music traditions.

It’s not easy to categorize my music; it crosses multiple genres. Like my kumu (teacher) Uncle Sonny Chillingworth, one of Hawai’i's legendary performers: he played Hawai’ian slack key guitar, Portuguese music, country, bossa nova, katchi-katchi… growing up in Hawai’i exposed me to both a melting pot of ethnicities as well as a constant influx of sounds from around the world. My various records reflect those diverse ingredients. Fortunately my roots are deep, having learned from the Slack Key Masters as a young boy.

As an independent artist I exercise my freedom in creating art that isn’t purely commercially driven, and I am blessed and humbled by the support of listeners around our planet. On this site you’ll find more perspective about my music, philosophy and history, learn about the art of Ki Ho’alu (slack key guitar), as well as get updated on my live performances and releases. Aloha!

The Malai Llama

The Malai Llama is an artist collective from Rollinsville, Colorado. Formerly known as Bob Molly, the group has grown from a musical quartet and quintet to a burgeoning community that embraces fire dancers and artists of the visual and performance variety. Malai Llama's music blends all you know about electronica with the freeform beauty of traditional jam bands and improvisational jazz groups. Categorization? Definition? Good luck. You'll find Malai Llama somewhere between Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and Jamiroquai. Envision The Grateful Dead with a DJ or Herbie Hancock backed by Phish. You don't so much "attend a Malai Llama show" as you "soak in a Malai Llama experience."

Matt the Electrician

Once upon a time, there was a young man named Matt Sever. He lived in Austin, TX, and he worked as a journeyman electrician. Every morning, when it was still dark outside, he would go to work, and wire houses all day long in the blistering Texas heat. When he would come home, again, it was dark outside. And then, sometimes, with no time to shower or change his clothes, he would go straight to the bars and nightclubs of Austin to play his songs for whomever would listen. And he would apologize for his appearance, and explain to the audience that he was an electrician, and he found a certain nobility in this, even if no one wanted to sit too close to the stage. So they called him Matt The Electrician, and he did not mind this, for he was proud of himself, for there is no shame in a hard days work. But eventually, he quit his job as an electrician, to spend more time writing and playing songs, and the name stuck with him, because everyone needs an electrician sometimes. Matt continues to tour all over the world, and released his 7th studio album, Accidental Thief in June of 2011.

The Mayan Factor

One word to describe The Mayan Factor is haunting. A listen to any song and you will never forget it. To hear either their melodies or Ray's lyrics is to be renewed. Together they blend into an irresistible force of inspirational creativity. Bridging the abyss of unreal to real, the spiritually dead to the vital, these guys are genuine, their warmth contrasting with the vapid corporate chill of modern culture. Living samplers, each man engulfs a smorgasbord of musical styles but they never tack anything on because they can do it. Their music wells from the wellspring of their souls. The old medicine is dead and with it spring. The last tricks have been tried, the last tapestry of their lies woven. The system is corrupt. The system is bankrupt. We await the wall to fall. Turn your ears to the new dispensation. Turn your hearts from the grave. Tune your hearts to the heart of THE MAYAN FACTOR ....

Devin Messina

Devin Messina is a driven singer, forged from the same musical fires as Brandy or Monica. But sharing a soft, sweet voice is where the similarities end. Devin wrote her first song at age 12, and at a young age brought the challenges of her upbringing into her music. Her passion that fuels her career today has burned strong her entire life—Devin formed her first group at age 12 and another group during high school. But all of the choirs, National Anthem performances, and group performances have not been her end-game. Devin is slated to appear on the upcoming mixtape Live at the Stadium, which features top artists from around the DC area. That collaboration, along with Devin's dynamic live performance and deep connection to her audience from the stage, will make "Devin Messina" a known musical commodity along the East Coast.

Metro City Riot

Metro City Riot has been performing under various monikers since 2002 and have traversed the country entertaining audiences from all walks of life—from the club stages of New York City and Miami to the silver screen of erotic filmmaking. Metro City Riot brings to the stage a deep, brash, violent sound that fuses together influences ranging from Motley Crue to Depeche Mode. The band forges a bond between hard rock and introspective New Wave that, along the way, earned them a spot in the CMJ music festival. And from city to city, the group has won a war's worth of Battles of the Band. "The End" from their forthcoming record is as 80s pop as it gets, with its thick synthesizers and Flock-of-Seagull vocal harmonies. But then, before rehashing music of yore, the song brings in a verse more akin to The Clash. While Metro City Riot pays homage to their poppier influences in the studio, their live show takes the band (and their fans) to another level, shifting their music into overdrive.

Mike and the Moonpies

Parts rock, parts country and folk, Mike and the Moonpies play with a soulful tenacity thick enough to damn near cut with a knife. This is good old fashioned, old-school, bar room blues. The quintet titled this year's full-length debut The Real Country—a title they seem to consider a charge to keep. They look the part, too. Front man Mike Harmeier sports a cowboy hat as he growls and drawls his way through a set of cutting country anthems, lead guitarist Catlin Rutherford puffs on a cigarette and pedal steel player Zachary Moulton is a tattooed vision of toughness. The band's stock has risen nationally thanks to a breakthrough session with Daytrotter and subsequent spot on the website's annual Barnstormer tour. "It doesn't matter where we play," says Harmeier. "We're a good dance band. That's what it's all about."

John Miller

John has been a DJ/VJ for 9 nine years. He was given a box of of albums by his Theology professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and was hooked on records. After graduation he made a career shift to video editing, web design, and animation. He applied those skills to create an online and pirate FM radio station called brandnameradio, written up in The Austin Chronicle.

He has also competed in the Alamo Drafthouse Sounds Seen VJ contest for two years. Through brandnameradio John specifically promoted and played eccentric local Texas musicians of the non-singer-songwriter variety. Through this he developed relatioships with many musicians and over time decided he no longer wanted to be behind the music anymore but wanted to play the music. At the age of 33 he formed Laserz with Todd Holbrook and quickly forced himself to play music by throwing himself up on stage with no shame. Now Laserz is working on their fourth album and plays all over Texas. John can still be found DJing at several venues around Austin including Pinup Salon.

Milton Mapes

from MiltonMapes.com:

Milton Mapes formed in 1999, naming the band after singer/guitarist Greg Vanderpool's grandfather. Vanderpool and bandmate Roberto Sánchez, both veterans of Dallas’ Deep Ellum music scene, subsequently spent a year in Nashville compiling songs that would make up the group's dusty debut release The State Line (2001). The 7-song CD was well-received by regional press and radio, drawing comparisons to Neil Young (Harvest) and Bruce Springsteen (Nebraska).

Milton Mapes eventually evolved into a complete band (with the addition of Britton Beisenherz and Jim Fredley), honing in closer on an atmospheric revival of Young's Crazy Horse or Bob Dylan's electric conversion. The group released the cinematic Westernaire (Aspyr Media) in 2003, reflecting this migration with a heavy dose of layered guitars and textures.

In 2005, the band emerged with a darker, more intense album, The Blacklight Trap, released by St. Louis indie label Undertow. Later that year, Shady Valleys, a small collection of b-side tracks, was made available as a downloadable EP.

Appearing both as a duo and with a full band, Milton Mapes has shared stages with an assortment of its respected Texas contemporaries and touring acts such as Chris Whitley, Willie Nelson, Magnolia Electric Co., and Cowboy Junkies. Following three albums and contributions for numerous compilation CDs and soundtracks, the group embarked on a new project under the name Monahans in 2007 while keeping an open door for future appearances or releases as Milton Mapes...

Monahans

Named for the West Texas sandhills, Austin-based Monahans began in 2006 as an offshoot project by Milton Mapes collaborators Greg Vanderpool, Roberto Sanchez, Jim Fredley and Britton Beisenherz. As Monahans, the group expanded on their landscape rock-and-roll with an intense, rhythmic, yet decisively apolitical pulse.

The band's first release, Low Pining (Undertow 2007), was born mostly out of nameless instrumental soundtracks (Explosions In The Sky meets Califone) and later weaved with lyrical strands of detachment and Cold War Era urgency in the spirit of early U2, R.E.M., The Police and everyone's hero, Neil Young.

With the consistent support of regional radio airplay, the record gradually found its way to various year-end favorites lists. Magnet Magazine listed Low Pining as one of its "10 Hidden Treasures of 2007" and Harp Magazine called it an "under-the-radar gem".

Motion Plus

With an unstable upbringing to battle, William "Motion+" Sterns was introduced to Hip Hop in 1981, by a cousin who worked at a local college radio station. The record William heard was Planet Rock. The rhythm stirred something within him and a B-Boy was born. This musical art-form gave him a way to release some of the pain over his Grandmother's death. He wrote his first song in honor of the woman who was the only constant in his life. Since that first song, he continued to write in response to the things he was going through. In his late teens William began to move around a lot. He lived in several cities and traveled through many others. St. Louis, Kansas City, San Diego, Tulsa, and NYC name just a few of the places he lived and visited. This traveling experience introduced him to a variety of styles in the music he loved, and expanded his creativity in the songs he wrote. Hip Hop has a reputation for glorifying the darker side of life, and like so many other kids he played into that scene for quite some time. He was in and out of gangs, running with dealers, and saw many friends go to jail or die. When William was arrested for a gun charge in 1995, he realized he needed to turn his life around or he wasn't going to survive. When he was at his lowest, facing three years in jail, he met a local pastor who taught him that there was a better way to manage his life. He realized that focusing on the good he could do was a better way to live. Now dedicated to making positive music, William as "Motion Plus" hopes to influence his listeners and the communities they represent by performing music with lyrics that will bring forth the good in people rather than glorifying the negative.

Mount Pressmore

Mount Pressmore makes music that crosses cultures and transcends categories. Their single, “Trampoline,” off their 2013 album, Enjoy, was featured by KUTX as Song of the Day on December 3, 2013. Of Mount Pressmore’s sound, KUTX deejay Paul Carrubba wrote, “It’s virtuosic, but it feels familiar.” It’s Herbie Hancock meeting Peter Gabriel in a Danny Elfman film score. It’s a comedy, for sure, but one that balances social satire with self-examination.

The band’s second studio album, The Masked Battle, will be released on July 1, 2017. Emerging five years into the band’s life span, The Masked Battle displays Mount Pressmore’s deep chemistry, inveterate searching, and visceral style. As lead singer Thomas Shaw describes the record, “[It] removes a beating heart from its ribcage, stomps on it in compound time, and folds the remains into a sonic tapestry of alienation and anxiety.”

The band has showcased at local and international festivals in Austin, such as the second annual VoyagerFest in September 2016 - an Austin-centric music festival devoted to progressive and experimental music. They also headlined the Austin International Pop Overthrow Festival in December 2016 for the third year in a row. Mount Pressmore continues to play regional shows and develop material for two new albums to be released in 2018.

Mr. P Chill

WHO is Mr. P Chill?

Mr. P Chill is a solo emcee, songwriter and producer that has independently released 9 albums, performed hundreds of concerts, and fronts his live backing funk/soul band, Trunk of Funk.

WHAT is Mr. P Chill?

For over 20 years, the evolution of the rapper known as Mr. P Chill has had one constant: an almost perverse obsession with the art of emceeing and a profound embrace of “real hip hop.”

To define what Mr. Chill is today starts with eliminating what Mr. P Chill is not—which is best described as a rapper that fervently rejects contemporary trends for weak rhymes set to commercial beats.

There’s no delusion of grandeur with Mr. P Chill. There’s no bling. There’s no gangsta posturing. There’s just the man that fell in love with rap during its “golden age” when it was about “two turntables and a microphone,” and maybe a well-worn pair of Adidas sneakers.

However, Mr. P Chill is not stuck in a time warp. Just as comfortable in a traditional setting with a DJ as he is with a full instrumental band that adds new textures to his music, Mr. P Chill is simply an ambassador of real hip-hop music.

Mr. P Chill is based in Sacramento, California, where he has anchored a thriving underground scene that has garnered him 6 nominations for the city’s highest honor, the Sacramento News & Review’s SAMMIES Award for Outstanding Emcee.

A frequent guest of stages throughout the Western region— from the Pacific Coast to the Rocky Mountains, Mr. P Chill has more recently enjoyed several successful national tours that brought him musical hotspots in New York City, Nashville, Memphis and many points in between.

WHY is Mr. P Chill?

Mr. P Chill exists because hip-hop compels him.
His lyrics focus on issues that matter and can’t be ignored.
Mr. P Chill thrives because his audiences truly relate to him and his unpretentious passion for hip-hop.

WHEN is Mr. P Chill?

Since 1992, there has rarely been a day when Mr. P Chill is not doing something related to his hip-hop career. If he’s not performing onstage, he’s busy in the studio, promoting shows and albums, or booking tours.

A decade or so ago, Mr. P Chill mattered because he was good. Today, he matters because he is a link to hip-hop’s glorious past when the music was designed to move the crowds and feed their minds.

Barrett Myers

There's something stirring in the heart of Barrett Myers, and chances are that he's written a song about it. Barrett loves a catchy melody, but something within yearns for depth and meaning; all of this shines through in soulful performances of his Folksy compositions on acoustic guitar. He's got more than a handful of heartfelt ballads about life, love and the journey, written on the road and at home in Indiana. These are complemented by upbeat and clever tunes that celebrate the wondrous goodness of thermal underwear and the 95 cent Burger King soft-serve ice cream cone. Born in Colorado and with roots in Kentucky, Barrett has been writing and performing music since a fateful road trip one spring day in 2008. Lately he's been seen entertaining the crowds at Adelino's Old World Kitchen on Monday evenings, and at various coffee shops and open mic nights around the Lafayette area.
