1-Year Later: A Follow-up Visit with Country Side Songwriter, Jason Peverett

Coyote Music: Jason Peverett! Thank you for taking time to visit with me.

Country Side / Jason Peverett: Wiley! I am glad to be back here again.

CM: I'd love to start by going back in time a bit... When was it that you first got interested in music--either writing it, performing it, or just listening to it?

CS / JP: I have always been around music my whole life. My dad and I bought records together, and shared music. And now I do the same thing with my son. I have been writing lyrics on and off my whole life and these two Country Side CDs are actually my third and fourth music projects.

Foghat's
Foghat's "Lonesome" Dave Peverett

CM: In our last interview, you mentioned your dad is the amazing "Lonesome" Dave Peverett. And sadly, you and the world lost him back in 2000. Could you share a story or two about what it was like growing up with your dad being the frontman of the legendary band Foghat?

CS / JP: Ha. I wish I can live my life over. I had the best upbringing thanks to my parents. I knew my dad was a legend growing up but now since 2000 I get to hear about him a lot at Foghat concerts, through email and social media. I wonder if he knew how much he was adored and liked. We never talked about that, my dad was my best friend, I just wish I got to spend more time with him because he was on the road a lot growing up.

CM: Bruce Springsteen said during an interview that his kids never saw him as "The Boss." Nah, he was just a dad who had a weird job (or something to that effect). What was your perspective like? Did it make your younger years any better, worse, or different than your friends'?

CS / JP: I knew quickly who were my friends because they liked me or who wanted to be my friends because my dad. I learnt more about that when I started working. I hardly tell anyone in the beginning who my dad was. Some people get impressed, some don’t care. When I started dating my mum would say I hope she is not dating you because who your dad is. Over the years it isn’t such a big deal. When my friends met my dad they were always surprised how quiet he is. When he was on stage he was playing a part, like Bruce does, like Alice Cooper does, like most singers.

CM: You've cranked out 48 songs on 2 records in the past 2 years. That's a helluva lot! :) Where does that much inspiration come from, with respect to your lyrical output?

CS / JP: Some of the songs were written years ago, I’m always writing lyrics, and some of the songs on Sloppy Seconds were left over from the first album. There’s a few songs left over from this album that might be put on the third album next year.

CM: You've got some hilarious song titles. On Sloppy Seconds I'm particularly fond of the title "You'll Be Right Back I'll Be Left Front." That's just BRILLIANT. Do you write down these sorts of witty quips when you hear them? Or do you think 'em up all yourself? I'm so fascinated by the different ways songwriters channel their thoughts into lyrics.

CS / JP: Haha! It all depends. That’s a saying I say a lot. I asked family and friends what phrases do I say a lot. 100% is one of them. Other lines or song titles are phrases I hear or think of and I’m always writing them down.

CM: Country Side is pretty openly you writing lyrics and then handing them over for "all things musical" to a crew of really stellar musicians and producers. Do you have an interest in singing or playing instruments? I mean, do you wish you were more of a performer or does that aspect of songwriting and music making not appeal to you as much?

CS / JP: Haha! No one would listen to the music if I was singing. I can’t carry a tune in a bucket. My sisters have musical talent, my son does, but I was screwed out of that. Haha. I would rather write the lyrics and direct the band to make the music. It’s better for everyone.

CM: I've got to ask: where did the title Sloppy Seconds come from?

CS / JP: The original title was gonna be Sophomore Slump which is a song from the album but I thought Sloppy Seconds which would make a funnier title. People think it’s gonna mean one thing what that phrase normally means but it’s a play on title, it’s the second album and a funny title. I like writing innuendo lyrics and titles.

CM: I just love that you literally have sloppy seconds on the album cover: those last couple fries, tots, and onion rings. Can you divulge where those are from? And are those your favorite? If not, the world wants to know: who does make your favorite fries, tots and onion rings?

CS / JP: Haha. I thought of that kinda cover very early in the stages of writing for this album. Thanks to Gary for taking my pictures and doing the CD package. He has more patience than I do for graphic work. Definitely I prefer fries. The photo was taken in Johnny Rockets in December last year.

CM: With 2 albums out and plenty of songs for fans to digest, are you looking to do some promotion? You've got a pretty active TikTok profile (@jaypearecords) any plans for doing advertisements online?

CS / JP: Yes, that’s my biggest hurdle… promotion. I should do more of it but don’t have a lot of time. I do have plans though, it’s just a matter of doing it.

CM: Finally, looking ahead, is album #3 already in the works? What can we expect from Country Side over the next year or so?

CS / JP: Kinda, yeah. There’s a few songs left over from this album and I have been writing more. Album three I plan to have out next May. The band already agreed to do another. I wanted to do a trilogy like I did with my novels. Then we’ll see if we’ll do anything after that. I have a feeling we will.

CM: Thanks so much for taking the time to visit with me and our readers!

CS / JP: Always! I hope we can do this next year! Thanks again, Wiley!
