For 15+ years, Black Astronaut Records' Charles Luck and Tino Red have cranked out wry and witty Hip-Hop. Luck shares a little bit about what it all means.
Coyote Music: Charles! Thanks for taking some time to answer a few questions for us and for our readers. First of all, what's up with Black Astronaut Records? Are you a band, a label, a duo?
Charles Luck: I’m Charles Luck. I write and executive produce. Tino Red raps and sings. Black Astronaut Records (BAR) is the name of the band. I put "records" on the name so it would spell out BAR. [lol]
CM: That's great! Anything to differentiate one artist from another counts. It's all about creating something unique and compelling amidst the constant road of new artists launching their own personas.
As I'm listening to 39 Charles Street I suddenly say to myself, "Holy shit, 'Addicts Mind' is incredible!" I love the Lennon sample / interpolation. I'd love to hear the transformation from the idea for that song to bringing in "Jealous Guy" to round out the vocal melody.
CL: I’m glad you liked "Addicts Mind." Definitely a favorite of mine. I used to sample heavily and always loved "Jealous Guy," so I rewrote the song and then pitched it, split it into thirds and added the 2 verses. Usually it’s a repeating sample for the hooks, I think I invented the splitting it into thirds thing.
(stay tuned, more to come!)
