Track listing: A Madman's Dream, Mind Descending, Absurd, I Won't Listen, Jesus' Tears
Dropped on August 4, 2024, A Madman's Dream/Mind Descending (EP) is the latest release from Würzburg-based heavy punk outfit Coma Beach. It's a 5-song compilation of radio versions and single edits of songs pulled from the band's full-length album The Scapegoat's Agony.
A knot in the brain / A face full of pain
A mind gone insane / All shouting's in vain
The "psychotic twin" title tracks kick things off with piss and vinegar, lots of attitude pouring out at you from the speakers. Then "Absurd" takes a sonically different turn, coming slowly out of the blocks yet still retaining the lyrical bitterness of the overarching themes found across The Scapegoat's Agony--painful and excruciating emotions felt by our protagonist/anti-hero.
Like "Absurd," "I Won't Listen" sticks with the morose vibe--imagine The Sex Pistols on downers, covering Pink Floyd. Just so much darkness. "I Won't Listen" does pick up tempo-wise about halfway through but continuing with the almost Clockwork Orange sense of dread and foreboding negativity.
The EP closes with "Jesus' Tears," a rather upbeat track a la Motorhead's heavy-hitting. The song taps into our anti-hero's delirium and madness as he spirals into a graphic crucifixion of sorts, vowing vengeance upon his captors.
Born from the minds of Captain A. Fear, B. Kafka & U. Terror, A Madman's Dream/Mind Descending is not an album for the easily queasy or those bordering on depression--it'd be a sure ticket to a darker place. But if you like your Punk a little more bitter and dark, Coma Beach is the band for you. You can find the new EP and more starting at comabeach.bandcamp.com.
