Atoms (Single)

by Ground Pilots

Track listing: Atoms

The initial strains of Ground Pilots' single "Atoms - Part One" feature a narration by Oscar-nominated actor Tom Wilkinson. His haunting words meld with the song's lyrics, which delve into the atomic composition of humans...and stars. The questions have been asked for eons, the answers have varied over those same eons as the breadth of human knowledge has parabolically grown over time.

Every atom of oxygen in our lungs, of carbon in our muscles, of calcium in our bones, of iron in our blood - was created inside a star.

And so Ground Pilots' members DT (vocals, guitar, keys), Max Bushell (drums), and Amie Alexis (bass) set the unknown, the mystery, and the questions to music leading up to the release of their forthcoming album entitled Atoms.

Musically, "Atoms" sets a melancholy tone for the realization that "Humans are made of stars | That's why you're living, that's why you're breathing." It is at once a simple and utterly mind-blowing concept to comprehend. Suffice it to say that Flat Earthers are fucked. Science!

Solemnly and seriously, "Atoms" asks whether our entire existence is merely a dream in which we are trapped. Is it? The compelling point is that we can't know for certain. "The only thing you need to know is that the ground will open up and swallow you."

Heavy subject matter, to be sure. But the silver lining surrounding this massive undertaking of scientific and psychological 'being' is the music itself. We lowly humans do have control over our creativity. And DT's guitar--soaring a la David Gilmour with its heavy dose of reverb and stereophonic grandeur--creates its own massive atmospheric body that pulls the song together.

"Atoms" is smart, daunting, and thought-provoking, much like the band's accompanying video. Whether hurling through the universe or traversing the streets of London after hours, we are bodies in motion doing our best to understand our purpose and motivation.
