I've stepped into 1968, haven't I? And I mean that as a very good thing. It was the greatest decade for music, dontcha think? The Beatles were entering their really interesting era, the Summer of Love was looming large in the near future, and the crackle of rock n roll permeated everyone's radios. What's taken me back to that incredible period is the latest release by Beavoys, one of several projects put forth by Al James. Binge Fringe is the 4th album he's released under the Beavoys moniker, and it's a sheer delight.

Released on February 22, 2025, what jumps out from the get-go with Beavoys' sound are those angelic harmonies. The Everlys, Beach Boys and Lennon & McCartney dominated that era in the genre, but James and his Beavoys gives the greats a run for their money. I'm a sucker for tight, gorgeous harmonies and each track on Binge Fringe is a clinic on how you sing like the legends of that time.

What I don't understand is the production. James is recording in the modern era, yet these songs emote the energy of the 60s in every aspect. The tight snare drum tucked far back in the mix. The crystal clear, prominent yet not overbearing bass guitar. And Doors-esque keys?!

I don't know what to do with this. I want to challenge its mere existence, arguing that these are some stolen masters from a back closet of Abbey Road Studios, of a band whose record deal fell through due to bad management rather than lack of talent or promise. But however you slice it, Beavoys' Binge Fringe is pure 60s era delight. Share it with your friends. Tell your mom. Hell, maybe even your grandma if you're young enough. You can find all sort of info, videos, and much more at the band's website: sunntones.wordpress.com/2025/02/22/official-video-and-full-release-of-binge-fringe-4th-beavoys-ep/. Heck, even the URL looks like it's from a website built in the 60s. Well done, Beavoys, well done indeed!
