Celebrate (Sound the Trumpet!) (Single)

by David Longoria

Track listing: Celebrate (Sound the Trumpet!)

"Celebrate (Sound the Trumpet!)" is the first single from the forthcoming debut solo album by trumpetist David Longoria. Slated for release in Spring 2025, the album will include this Henry Purcell piece, Haydn's "Trumpet Concerto in Eb" and other works featuring European Symphony Orchestras and a number of noted classical vocalists and instrumentalists.

Featured performers on "Celebrate (Sound the Trumpet!)" include Mezzo-Soprano Diana Tash and vocalist A.J. Teshin, both known for their work with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and The Los Angeles Opera.

Stylistically, Longoria sticks primarily to a traditional instrumentation. Whereas Purcell originally wrote the Baroque piece for a SATB chorus (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) accompanied by strings and continuo (cello, harpsichord), Longoria assembles this ensemble but adds the instrument for which the work was named.

The addition of a featured trumpet reimagines and energizes the piece, adding to the brightness of the ensemble previously created only via the harpsichord. Longoria's performance provides perhaps an even greater 'royal' mood to the melodies, originally intended as a birthday celebration for Queen Mary II.

The interplay among Tash, Teshin, and Longoria is simply delightful, the trumpet dancing in and around the vocal parts. Longoria tastefully allows Tash, Teshin, and the choral ensemble to take the lead during their moments. But as the instrumental counterpoint comes back to him, Longoria delivers a powerful performance that impresses without dominating the entirety of the ensemble.

Thus far, listeners have flocked to hear this rendetion of "Celebrate (Sound the Trumpet)." Its presence on YouTube has garnered more than 60,000 views in just 3 weeks. During the same period it's earned more than 50,000 streams on Spotify and rocketed to the top of the iTunes Classical Top 200.
