COLOR is the debut full-length album from St. Paul, Minnesota artist Gozie Ukaga. Ten tracks of ethereal, atmospheric tracks setting the scene for his thought-provoking emotion-rich lyrics. Released in November 2024, COLOR is the long-anticipated follow-up to Ukaga's 5-song EP SHADE which dropped 5 years prior.
Musically not unlike The Weeknd, Ukaga creates sparse arrangements with wispy, light clouds of synths over which he articulates his message. "Interstate 94" is a highlight of the record, released with an accompanying 'short film'--yes, it's basically a music video but shot with an artistry and style of a theatrical release. Interstate 94 (the film) was chosen as an Official Selection at the 2024 Sound Unseen Film Festival.
"Grudge" stands out lyrically, delving into trust issues and a relationship failed. Ukaga conveys sentiments felt by most but rarely communicated effectively, with a bare bones honesty and openness that can be difficult to communicate between partners.
One the one hand, COLOR is a mellow, chill record to throw on when you want to dim the lights and escape into another realm. But it's also as much of a work of art as it is just another release by another up-and-coming artist. COLOR and Gozie Ukaga are worth your time.
