Crisis in a Babylon (Single)

by The Big Mackoofy

Track listing: Crisis in a Babylon

London-based The Big Mackoofy is a trip! The trio takes you on a literal cross-genre journey through musical history. A little Funk, Electronic, Reggae, Jazz, Soul all blended together with sounds from around the world. Their latest single "Crisis in a Babylon" embodies a smooth Reggae vibe, layered with synthesizers in a dreamy, reverby realm.

Somewhere in the universe there is a night club - and in that night club they play the 13th Floor Elevators, Burning Spear, Curtis Mayfield, Fela Kuti and Ginger Baker, Jimi Hendrix, 60’s Soul, The Coup, Jorge Ben playing Africa Brasilia, Lee Scratch Perry, The Redskins, Old Skool Hip Hop, Sly and the Family Stone, Billy Cobham, Toots and the Maytals, Augustus Pablo, The Meters, CSNY and the Clash.

It's danceable enough to be dropped in a dark club at 2 in the morning. And you wouldn't think twice hearing it on your favorite Caribbean beach in the middle of the afternoon. It's at once tropical and metropolitan.

The Big Mackoofy are a trio of Jeff Lucas, Anthony Joseph and Eddie Blindell. While the three have included a number of contributors over time, they comprise the core lineup.

I haven't been able to draw solid comparison for The Big Mackoofy. In the 90s, what Us3 did with loops and jazz samples was creative enough but Mackoofy are their own sole composers. There's a little Santana/Marley/Fugees/Wyclef vibe, stylistically--culturally aware songs like "Che Guevara" and "Refugees Welcome" make important statements. But then you get "Coked Up Mediocre Posh Boys" on your playlist and it's got sort of a Fatboy Slim sound to it--just a shit-ton of fun.

Whether you dig The Big Mackoofy for their more club-kid side, socially conscious writing, skilled musicality, or whatever else you may hear and identify with...there's a whole lot to love and dive deeply into. Follow the group's socials and streaming profiles, all found at thebigmackoofy.net. And they've got 6 full-length albums and a number of singles ready for you on Spotify
