Oh HELL-TO-THE-YEAH! You absolutely need to go put on Dandy John's Dandyworld. In the best possible way, this is Eurovision come to life. Think: the happiest parts of ABBA's history set to a Broadway musical, sans all the silly wedding plot of Mamma Mia. And the world is absolutely LOVING IT. Dandy John's YouTube Channel has over 1 million subscribers and I stopped mentally adding up the sum total of his videos' Views when I got to 20 million.
Stylistically, the album winds its way through genres. "Crank" could be a backing track of Weird Al covering an Eminem song, with a dash of Dr. John thrown in for good measure. The opening song "Together" is an Up With People-esque theme for inspiration and optimism about human relationships. What's really endearing is Dandy John's wonderful accent on his English lyrics. It's friggin' heart-warming. "Freak" has a little more Funk to it. Kinda reminiscent of George Michael's "Freeek" as far as the backbeat goes (but no other similarities).
I just find myself looping this album, as sweet and seemingly simple Pop as it is, because it makes me so happy. Sugar sweet, even. John's got his ballad dedicated to the 'future of the world' appropriately entitled "Children"--I could absolutely see this playing in the background of the next big kids' blockbuster feature film. It's a little campy but not to the point that you disregard it. For some reason I can't identify, I am transfixed by this record. And certainly, once "Children" had grabbed my attention I absolutely had to listen to "Parents." And "Soulmate." And "Friendship." And "Love." You get the picture.
Dandy John cycles through everything we care about in our lives and has done his best to provide a soundtrack to all of it. It takes me back to the first time I heard Snoop Dogg's Affirmations. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. And now I feel the same thing. Way to go, Dandy John! The world can be an ugly, harsh place. It can also be beautiful and awe-inspiring. So let the world put Dandyworld on and hit the Pause button on all the negativity that surrounds us. For even just a moment, delight in something wonderful. Or call it what it is: Dandy.
