Track listing: Alien Abduction, Danger Oso, Ride My Bike, Red Hot, Monsters We've Become, Little Death
Austin-based spacey-indie trio Tiny Specks dropped a follow-up to their 2024 debut album in the form of a 6-song EP entitled First Contact. Befitting the sound and genre, the extraterrestrial theme extends beyond the EP's title through the first track "Alien Abduction." Effects-laden guitars and reverb-heavy vocals compliment the mysterious lyrics and odd time signature. The leadoff track draws you in to the band's faraway universe and piques interest as to what's in store from the remaining songs.
"Danger Oso" takes a raw punkish turn followed by a venture into a New Wave-y bridge before circling back to its punk starting line. "Ride My Bike" channels their quirky B-52s influences while "Red Hot" leans on Bikini Kill's brashness and carefree attitude, with a bold enough cowbell to sufficiently fulfill even Will Ferrell's requests for more.
Several of First Contact's tracks are pulled from their 2024 Goodbye Earth album, reworked and bolstered by an additional year of experience, growth among the songs, the band members themselves, and leveled-up recording and production. An increased maturity and confidence toward their musical expression is evident in the exploratory minute or so addition to "Monsters We've Become," which expands on its outro instrumental section with a fun, creative frivolity.
The band's progression in its less-than-2-year existence is evident. Live shows begat demos which begat album #1. Then honing those tracks and coming more into their own warranted First Contact which better represents Tiny Specks' existence in 2025. They're keeping their show schedule filled, playing at least a couple shows a month, so give them a follow across their social and streaming platforms. And venture into a Tiny Specks show to see 'em for yourself. Begin your journey at tinyspecksatx.com.
