Hard Enough (Remix)

by DownTown Mystic

Track listing: Hard Enough

Downtown Mystic has dropped another gem from the ever-giving Asbury Park musical tree. "Hard Enough (Remix)" is the first single from the upcoming On E Street EP set for release April 2026. It features none other than E Street rhythm section, drummer Max Weinberg and bassist Garry Talent. The song's signature lead guitar lick in the chorus brings out the melodic shape of the song and puts that all-important musical earworm into your head so you'll be singin' it tomorrow morning without even realizing it. The single includes the On E Street Remix and the instrumental TV Mix, for you music synchers looking for an energetic, roots-rockin' backdrop for your next road trip scene or plot-advancing montage.

As part of the promotional work for this single, the story of the photo shoot cannot go untold. When I saw the shots, I recognized the street almost immediately: Stone Street in Lower Manhattan. But what I didn't recognize was the entire absence of humans not in the shot--and it didn't look like the image had been photoshopped or AI-enhanced.

Downtown Mystic's Robert Allen explains, "I had a photo shoot with Mark Maryanovich from LA at the Brooklyn Bridge by Jane's Carousel at 5am before the sun came up. After that, I wanted to shoot by Delmonico's (used for the front of the hotel in the John Wick movies), but it was Saturday and garbage was piled all over the streets and it was raining. We passed by Stone Street 2 or 3 times and walk down to a building under construction, a private residence across from a bakery and Ulysses Bar. Because of the construction, they close off a little lane so I get in my car and back down Stone into this little driveway that's secluded and you can't see my car if you're the cops. I used the trunk of my car as my private dressing room and Mark set up on the street and we had our private NYC photo shoot on the street for 2 hours."

This story had to reach the light of day if for no other reason than knowing the difficulty and cost of obtaining permits to do this sort of shoot 'legally'. But you mix a little rain and construction and: BOOM! Instant affordable photo shoot yielding one-of-a-kind moments in the city that never sleeps.

But back to the track itself, "Hard Enough" has all the gusto and moxy of Downtown Mystic's entire repertoire. The outro's got the requisite boogie woogie piano and the chorus shows off the tight vocal harmonies that have made the Jersey music scene legendary for the past half century.

I love it when a Downtown Mystic track appears in my Inbox because I know I'm about to hear something good. In this time of AI-this or pitch-shifting-that, you just know that when you put the needle to the vinyl of a Downtown Mystic album, you're hearing peopleMusicians. A crew of folks who take their jobs seriously and strive toward the high bar (nay, perfection?) that this genre sets for the rest of the music world.
