When I think of psychedelic Country/Western, one of my go-to's is Doug Sahm in all of his rock-meets-country fabulousness. But The Sensational Country Blues Wonders! out of Jersey City take this shit to a whole other level! Songs like "Why Did I Eat the Whole Bag of Mushrooms?" and "I Rode the Bus with Joey Ramone" are just bizarre enough to create an indelible memory in all of our minds.

Songwriter/Singer Gary Van Miert channels his best Ernest Tubb behind the mic, espousing songs that challenge current norms in the country/western genre. "One More Cup of Mushroom Tea" weaves a web of Cat Stevens' "Cats In The Cradle" alongside some George Harrison-esque sitar. Folky, Country, and a heavy dosage of whatever it takes to write these songs--presumably some mushrooms?

What's also evident is that, while having fun and penning some silly tunes, The Sensational Country Blues Wonders! are also 100% dedicated to their craft. These tracks are professionally recorded, well-engineered, the musicianship is quality--sort of a Spinal Tap of psychedelic roots music.

A hearty example of the fun, frivolity, and seriousness is "Gravity." The lyrics are the stuff of envy from the likes of Bill Nye The Science Guy. Musically, you get a player-piano-style old speakeasy saloon vibe, sure. Then the multiple-kazoo solo kicks in while a heavily phased guitar and science fiction sound effects abound in the background.

The Sensational Country Blues Wonders! are certainly a trip (you decide what that's gonna mean for yourself). And If I Stop Moving, I'll Fall From The Sky is an album of note for anyone who's still got an open mind for some silliness along with their daily dose of Country/Americana.
