Track listing: Just Like Honey
Newcastle rockers Flowers for Juno dropped their cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain's "Just Like Honey" on November 24, 2024. It's a pretty faithful rendition as far as the arrangement and performance. What jumps out as an immediately new production vision is the full-bodied sound! That kick drum will shake you to your soul if you're playing it at the volume it deserves.
Louder, beefier, modernized, but with all the angst and charm of the original. I'd like to think that J.A.M.C.'s Jim and William Reid would give it their approval, recognizing the nod to the quality of the cover as well as the desire for an artist in 2024 to revisit the song and give it some of their own flare.
A fun twist that Flowers for Juno has added, though, is a backwards version of their recording tacked onto the end of the forward version. On Flowers for Juno's YouTube Channel this is done in a single track. But when viewed as an album on Spotify, the tracks are listed separately: "Just Like Honey" as track one and "yenoH ekiL tsuJ" as track two. The delightfully odd thing about this is that the version in reverse is also a pretty compelling song itself. I love the creativity in the act, though--the beauty of any cover is when the new artist adds their own personality to the original composition. Flowers for Juno has certainly accomplished that (or should it be credited to onuJ rof srewolF?).
