Mirrors In My Mind (Single)

by Allen Brooks

Track listing: Mirrors In My Mind

"Mirrors in My Mind" offered up so much as a song + video combo, I needed to break down my review to the song in one place, and the mindblowing video as a separated endeavor entirely. So let's dive into this song on its own merits.

The primary riff brings to mind a bit of Metallica's intro to "One" or even "Enter Sandman." But for the sake of "Mirrors in My Mind," the tempo sticks to the moderate realm. You've got a blistering sax solo, and lyrics that go all over the place, inspiring the ghastly imagery in the aforementioned video.

We've certainly got a rocker here. Allen Brooks takes the helm covering vocals, bass, and guitar. Argentines Mariano Vega (drums) and Plátano Ebrio (timpani) bring literally heavy hitting beats that give the track its ominous, pounding feel. And fellow countryman Mariano Power absolutely brings it on saxophone. Andrew Caccese (Italy) handled the track's mix, mastering, and production.

Lyrically, Brooks delves into our fractured inner psyches. He gives a nod to Steam Powered Giraffe and Primus in the song's third verse, helping to explain some of the "weird" element "Mirrors" reflects. The narrative takes a twisting and turning path through psychedelia but brings home what Brooks describes as "love and connection" being our "only anchor in the storm."

In celebration of "Mirrors" release, along with three other singles and accompanying videos, Allen has vowed to offer the four tracks as free downloads on his website, essentially for perpetuity. So get on over to allenbrooks.net and soak in the sights and sounds of Allen's virtual realm of video and sound.
