Track listing: My Name Is George
Wow. You'd hope and try to have enough faith in humanity that this song wouldn't be needed...but there is enough hatred and bigotry out there, that beautiful songs of love and acceptance continue to be paramount in making forward progress as a society. Dan & Faith's latest single "My Name Is George" is a powerful one. The press release about the song gives you all the facts about the song, its release, where you can find it, stream it, and even see Dan & Faith perform live.
So that leaves room for a review and, luckily enough, you've found it! "My Name Is George" is a pretty straightforward Folk song in the tradition of Baez, Guthrie, Dylan. Strummed acoustic guitar, mid-tempo, with lyrics that convey a story--a message the songwriters feel is important and worthy of your time.
While it's not completely clear whether or not "My Name Is George" is autobiographical in nature, it also doesn't really matter. Gay and Trans youth today are among the most at-risk population in the United States. Sometimes the danger is internal--doubt, fear, confusion. But just as common, if not moreso, is external danger. Hate-filled, insecure, and needlessly aggressive persons abound, making every day in the life of a Trans youth a perilous journey simply to make it from waking up in the morning to falling asleep at night.
Through "My Name Is George," Dan & Faith sing of a wonderful moment of two parents' acceptance of their Trans child. Once Emily and now George, each singer addresses the transition from their point of view. And while not without some challenge of adaptation, and a learning curve of how to accept something different and new in their lives, the parents at the heart of the story do just that. And it is beautiful.
