DownTown Mystic's new EP entitled Mystic Highway blasts off with the pile-driving, boogie woogie, oldie-but-a-goodie track "History." Appropriately, this tune channels the sound of rock 'n' roll's very beginnings--a Little Richard meets Jerry Lee Lewis piano-banging good time. Then immediately following, "Modern Ways" tears into the fretboard with a "Johnny B. Goode" lick and a 4-on-the-floor rhythmic locomotive (technically speaking, the drummer only kicks on '1' and '3' but that don't keep it from being an unmistakable 1-2-3-4 vibe).

The heavy hitting feel of the EP lightens up a bit with the more melodic approach of "Read The Signs." It's still kickin' ass, but brings in a 1/2-time section, some tight vocal harmony, and a more relaxed overall feeling that makes you wanna roll down the windows on a long summer's day drive. "Lost and Found" brings a bit of a Heartbreakers sound to the record, both in guitar tone and harmony vocal intervals.

It's "Some Day" that provides quite a change-up for the EP. Its simply gorgeous vocal harmonies spread across this leisurely ballad, rich with reverb'd lead guitar licks, some broad Allman/"Melissa" acoustic guitar sounds, and JJ Jordan making his guitar sing just like a pedal steel which puts a musical cherry on top. The rest of the record is a tight, fun rock 'n' roll experience but I'd be willing to be that the whole band is really proud of the work they put in to "Some Day."

Bringin' the EP to a close is our previously reviewed "Somebody's Always Doin' Something 2 Somebody." And with that, Mystic Highway wraps at just shy of 23 minutes. DownTown Mystic has recorded a solid calling card to represent their sound--that unmistakable Asbury/Jersey vibe that's always a joy to have as a soundtrack to your day.
