Nag nag nag (Single)

Track listing: Nag nag nag

Hooyoosay is an interesting musical collective--all anonymous performers, seeking no outside recognition, creating music purely for the enjoyment and freedom of doing so. The collective has numerous albums and singles released over the past 15 years. But for the sake of today we're diving into their latest single "Nag nag nag."

I hear a fleshed-out Fred Schneider/B52 energy packed into a bit of a more focused production. A dash of pub-rock frivolity, smirking and sneering at those who scoff at it. What sounds like a bunch of pop nonsense is actually a deeper critique of those who seek to classify and over-intellectualize their Pop music. "Nag nag nag" serves essentially as a satire, pointing at those very souls who typically mock and comment on the absurdity of mindless Pop compositions.

When a group of creators join forces with an agreement on not listing album credits, and not messing with organizing performances and tours, the creative juices get to flow with absolute and unmitigated freedom. The group's rotating and entirely anonymous nature creates a strange mythology around the music — part indie-pop project, part anti-ego experiment. And while I may not personally keep this single on repeat, or drop it in my Pandora Party Channel, there's a level of excitement and celebration across hooyoosay's discography that almost accidentally makes their music the life of the party.

Check out Hooyoosay, "Nag nag nag," and the rest of their music and somewhat mysterious online existence beyond the music: hooyoosay.com. Share your thoughts on its beauty, mystique, and, hell, just flat out fun and freedom of artistic expression.
