Psychopath (Single)

by Sydney Gordon

Track listing: Psychopath

How many of us can admit to having dated a 'psychopath' in our past? In her latest single of the same name, Staten Island-based pop singer/songwriter Sydney Gordon takes a creative path to exploring this toxic outcome in all-too-many relationships. Rather than hating on the ex, talking about how bad and crazy they were, this gorgeous ethereal ballad is narrated by the so-called problem, themselves.

The lyrics are an admission, with a slight attribution of blame at the culmination of the chorus: "Out of body experience, out of control. Out my head, out my mind, I can’t help it though. I'll admit I got trust issues, I can’t let go 'cause I had an ex who made me a psychopath."

Is this sympathy we're feeling here? Has the villain become the victim? It's the unexpected plot twist at the end of the movie that no one saw coming! Not to mention that the music and melody back up the feeling of safety, security, and comfort.

The refrain of the chorus has a major chord, repeated, reinforcing melodic pattern reminiscent of Kesha's "This Is Me"--the feel good anthem of 2017--all about encouragement, positivity, confidence, empathy, and sympathy. Is the "psychopath" the bad person...or is it the toxic partner who fostered a feeling of constant mistrust and discomfort?

This song isn't about a solution. Gordon merely examines an age old situation from a new point of view for the sake of the listener's consideration. Maybe when we say we've dated that person before...maybe, just maybe, we should take a look in the mirror and see if the person we're looking at is the actual problem.
