Their own bio describes San Francisco based California Twilight as "the best of pop-punk, pop-rock, and punk-rock." But what you hear on their new album Royals is a more refined, grown-up, stylized sub-sect of pop and punk. Overtones of the large sound and sweeping reverb-rich vocals harken to a big Oasis-like production (minus the Gallagher attitude).

What also deserves a mention is the band's selection of no less than three vinyl versions of their album. Check out the 180g black, 180g half-and-half splatter, and 180g solid gold in their online store at https://californiatwilight.com/collection/all

But with regard to the sound, Royals shows aggression on deliberate rockers like "Kingdom of the Damned." The title track inspiring "We're All Royals" you can pick up on some punk roots with the Ramones-esque vocal delivery. Wrapping up the LP is "Sunset," a gorgeous instrumental featuring . . . is that piano?! A bit of an anomaly on a punk album but the change-up of instrumentation provides a nice relief after 7 straight rockers.

California Twilight--or 'CT' as their graphics and online presence offer for the syllabically challenged--have put together an impressive debut album. It's crisp, tight, heavy enough without going overboard with any self-indulgence. Check out the band, their gorgeous vinyl, and much much more at californiatwilight.com.
