Track listing: Swimming Around
On August 21, 2024 Nashville-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Lucciana Costa drops her single, "Swimming Around." The track is the first single from her debut solo project, a 4-song EP produced by David Wimbish (The Collection, SlowTells). Costa lists among her influences Margaret Glaspy, Orla Gartland and Neko Case but "Swimming Around" also pulls in a 90s-era Belly/Tanya Donelly sound--sweet yet powerful, emotive and melodic.
"Swimming Around" jumps right off the starting blocks with a frenetic mid-tempo beat, Costa's vocals nearly acapella with only a muted rhythm guitar accompanying deep in the mix. As the song gains momentum, its bridge creates a repetitive vocal/instrumental loop that eventually splashes into the broad-spectrum chorus featuring all sorts of fun sonic bells and whistles. Nothing overpowering, but there's a dazzling display of keys, guitars, and maybe a synth for good measure.
After the next verse we build the same refrain:
Keeping me close is gonna
Keeping me close is gonna
Keeping me close is gonna
Keeping me close is gonna
There's a beautiful tension building, again and again through the line's repetition, eventually joined by the chorus' "Break you down" lyric in the song's rousing apex.
"Swimming Around" is a strong first pop single for Costa, known up until now primarily as a country artist. This single will certainly make waves, though, drawing attention to her center stage, performing under her own moniker.
