Track listing: Today
TJ Gurn has a message for the world in his latest single, "Today." Amidst the harsh divisiveness we see daily on the news and in our social feeds, the song invites us collectively to change. And when can that change begin? Today.
I can't remember a time, so divided. Try to find the truth, but it's always one-sided
The Greenville, South Carolina native sings with a wistful rasp, evoking moods through his melodies a la Ray LaMontagne. Then you add his lyrical conviction to the mix--influenced early on by the likes of The Clancy Brothers. There's a believability to it all, a maturity and sincerity shining through.
"Today" coaxes listeners with TJ's plea: "Don't you wait to make a change. We ain't got forever, but we got today." A folky cry for help, hoping society will join together for the better good. It's just the right thing to do, and Gurn sells it with pure heartfelt emotion.
As I sat down to write about "Today" I ran across this video of his duet of "Fields," recorded earlier this year with Saemore. You see firsthand that Gurn sings his emotions, writing each lyric from the heart, channeling honest feelings and painting them across his songs with broad melodic strokes. And video after video...they're all recorded outdoors. His connection to nature underscores the genuine sensibility found in his songwriting.
TJ is current traversing the United States, with November dates that start in California, hit Arizona and Texas, leading him through a series of dates up into NYC and Boston.
