Reno-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Stoney Forde's got a new single and accompanying video out for "Straight Outta Reno." It's got a lyrical nod to Johnny Cash's famous 'shot a man in Reno' lyric but Forde primarily set out to capture the artistic spirit of his home city.
"Reno isn't a place on a map that you can find with latitude and longitude coordinates, it's a state of mind for the creative endeavor to nurture and grow." He wrote and recorded the track as a bit of a tribute to musicians' creating art that touches crowds all over the world.
For "Reno," Forde set forth playing all manner of instruments--guitar, trumpet, piano, a whistle, as well as vocals. But for the drums and percussion he delved into the realm of loops and samples, giving this tune a fresh backbeat and rhythm. With his trumpet parts, he gives another nod to the spaghetti western tradition and music of composer Ennio Morricone.
What Forde assembles with "Straight Outta Reno" are lyrics he hopes to serve as a sort of anthem for the special places in our lives. It's an ode to the quirky outta-the-way holes in the wall where you know of a great burger joint, a kitschy unknown artist, an off-the-beaten-path natural marvel. Smaller towns tend to put this off better but you also have neighborhoods and even specific blocks in cities that capture their own special kind of magic.
